Michael,

THe following appears in Alex Imrie's "German fighter units
on the Western Frint", p. 23:

Jagdstaffel 2

Hauptmann Boelke was recalled from his tour of the Eastern Front
by a telegram from the Flugchef on 11 August, which stated that he was to
form and command Jagdstaffel 2. Formation began at Bertincourt on 27
August, two Fokker D biplanes and one Albatros DI [426/16] being used
initially. Boelke scored his 20th victory on Fokker DIII [?] 352/16 [
I assume he means Albatros] on 2 September and this was the first unit
victory. Six Albatros DIs were received on the 16th and as a result of
enemy shelling of the aerodrome, the unit moved to Lagnicourt during the
night of 22 September.

As far as ranks go:

Gefreiter: small button on collar
[in line with shoulder-
strap button]
Obergefreiter: larger button in same position
Unteroffizier: lace on collar and cuffs
Sergeant: lace as above, large button
on collar
Feldwebel: lace and larger button
on collar, double lace on
cuffs.

Cheers,

Mick.
