Bill,
As a further followup on this topic, I'd like to recommend a recent
book by Norman Franks, Russel Guest, and Frank Bailey entitled Bloody April
.. Black September. It is a day-by-day account of the arial fighting on the
Western Front during April 1917 and September 1918. I'm only half-way
through, but I can wholeheartedly recommend it as a most instructive and
eye-opening volume.
Basically, its point is this: although German records are incomplete,
it appears that Allied, mainly British and American, victory claims were
exaggerated by several orders of magnitude, while, for a variety of reasons,
German claims were pretty accurate. Interesting stuff.
