I'm sure you can learn more from the owners manual than from me. And experiment, experiment, experiment. Digital photos cost nothing until you decide to print the good ones.

But I'll suggest a few things and others can chime in. A setup with good lights is better than flash because the camera is going to be way too close to the subject for flash, and flash creates unexpected reflections and severe shadows.

Outdoors in direct sun creates severe shadows too. Outdoors in the shade is a very good option if weather permits.

Indoors I ended up using a large white sheet of heavy paper as a background (pale blue or gray etc. would be fine). Tape or pin the bottom of the sheet to your workbench and let it curve gently up onto the wall behind your bench and tape or pin it. This gets you a seamless clean background.

Indoor floodlights should be 'Daylight' color instead of traditional incandescent bulbs which give a yellow cast to your pictures. One brand is 'Ott' lights but there are many others. If you do use incandescent bulbs there should be a way to set your camera for 'Indoors without flash' or something, which will remove some or all of the yellowness.

A tripod is helpful because it lets you pose the model and aim the camera more carefully. But I have taken many pix without a tripod because my camera has 'Steady Shot' which helps eliminate blurry shots caused by camera jiggle.

Hope this helps for starters. Ask questions. Others chime in.

Jim
