I can second the oven cleaner method. I usually put the kit in a plastic bag, to keep the fumes at bay.
The best thing about it is that it doesn't harm the styrene even if kept untouched for a while. I've forgotten kits bagged like this for weeks..... :-)

Spray on a foaming coat and leave it outside on some newspaper for about half an hour, then wash under cold water in a sink.  Works like a charm!
