[WWI] Dilemma

Okay, I've recently rediscovered two kits that are "almost finished".
They're both Toko HB D.Is: one, "out of the box"; the other uses the
Rosemont conversion fuselage for a different version.
Where I'm at is both have been painted overall CDL (basically I was
thinking of using that as a "primer" beneath the wood fuselage color),
including the upper wings (both sides) and the rudders. I stalled
because I completely sanded the conversion wing because I didn't like
the faux fabric effect. I have 3/4ths of that one decaled with A/G CDL
strips to represent the ribs (which is a different color than the CDL -
Misterkit - I used for painting). I was going to apply the CDL strips
to the lower wing as well, just for consistency, along with the
"standard" kit.
However, I'm thinking now I'll just finish the one wing with CDL strips
then try to mask the other wings (including the lower wing of the
conversion) and try my hand at "shading-airbrushing" (if that makes
sense). Would that look too stupid with the upper wing being finished
that way, and the lower wing being "shaded"?
What does everything think? Continue that way, and just finish the
suckers? They probably won't be contest material, but at least they'll
(finally) be finished. The other dilemma I have is I can't find the
"gun coffins" for either of them. I tried sending them to a friend to
"fix", but he ended up losing interest and after he sent them back, I
lost them <sigh>. Maybe I'll buy another kit, fix that one (there are a
lot of problems with it "out of the box") and send it to someone to cast.
Oh, just as a reference, I started these right when Rosemont released
the coversion set, oh-so-many-years-ago...
