I think I found one photo you were thinking of and my reckoning is badly
stained CDL - see p12 of the Datafile
- The nose is much darker, and one of the PC finishes wouldn't show so
much contrast even with a black nose,
- The serial is applied in black on a pale coloured fin - if it were
pigmented finish the letter would not show so clearly and would have been
applied in white or with white outlines or in white box if the fin was CDL
and the rest of the plane PC10 or 12 there would be a lot more contrast
- The fuselage apparntly shows serious staining which might be the source
of some confusion - it's worth looking at photos of RNAS machines in the
Aegean to see just how badly discoloured CDL could get
There is of course the possibility that some local brew using local pigments
was used as a camouflage over CDL; if you want to pursue that idea then
you're really on your own
>> All photos I've seen look a little darker than CDL, but lighter than
PC10. Doug Campbell sent some very nice photos that only confirmed my
belief. Anyway, thanks for the response. I'm still up in the air as to how
I'm going to paint her.
