      Ralph, I've used John's technique and it is very good.

      For a model of that size, I might use a heavier piece of steel rod, and drill at least 1/4" deep holes.

Use a straight pin and cut a small section off the end.  Use a drill the same size as the pin and drill pilot holes in the two parts that will be joined.  Insert the pin in one part and then add glue and insert the pin in the remaining pilot hole.  Let the glue set and you will have a strong joint.
