Better than bashing witha hammer, can you ring up a couple of steel
wheels in a screw press and flatten the wire between them? That will
give you an even pressure and with a bit of practice you should be
able to produce repeateable sections.
I was thinking of a couple of ball bearings with the outside of the
outer races being used to swage the wire and perhaps using copper
rather than stainless.
You will need to tension the wire to get it straight again - I
believe some ship modellers pass an electric current through wire to
heat it while it's under tension, but I haven't looked at what sort of
current would be needed to provide enough heat without making it go
"phut".
