The book you need is the Medal of Honor winners from Flying Machine Press.
If I recall there are color profiles of both M.5's that took part in the MOH
mission. They were painted with italian insignia but the hull was repainted
with black & white stripes and a grey goat which was some kind of US navy or
personal marking. Of course my copy of this book is packed away in my
storage area on the other side of the state.

Any information on who the pilot was?
Was he a Naval Academy graduate? <

The Datafile colour notes say only that
it was with the US Navy NAS, based at
Porto Corsini in summer/auumn 1918, (and
the colours of the stripes are, as
usual, conjectural). However, there's a
caption to the photo on which it's based
(page 35, photo 96,) which says that it
was flown by various people on various
dates: Ensign Johansen (22 August, 5
September), sergente Guarnieri (22
October), and Ensign Clark (7 December).
The photo is from the US Naval Aviation
Museum.

Further sources quoted are p.24 of Naval
History, April 1987, research notes of
Dr. Martin O'Connor, and correspondence
with Bill Devins.

That's all there is that I've found in
the Datafile, and I have no other
information I'm afraid.

Paul.
