Hello,
Personnally I like to build aircrafts of pilots who were particular, for any reason, or that had nice personal decos on their planes.
For Belgians, I plan to build Nieuports 23 of Verbessem and Goethals. Both were killed in action during the war. First one had a green triangle on the fuselage (and his diaries were published some years ago; he was a really human guy); second was had a splendid eagle on the fuselage.
Cheers
Daniel

Subject: [WWI] Pilots of Interest
Hello, List,
Shane just asked why Oliver Colin LeBoutillier was of any interest. This got me to thinking...
Who interests you most, among WWI aviators, and why? What leads you to choose the particular aircraft you are modeling: Cool paint scheme? High-scoring ace's mount? Are you more into the aircraft, or their pilots? Or do both endlessly hold your interest?
Not to exactly speak for Ira, but... the guy is a big fan of Hans-Joachim von Hippel. He wasn't an ace. But he always flew cool-looking aeroplanes. Just as an example...
I personally got into this reading about Rickenbacker, Luke, and von Richthofen when I was about seven. As Rickenbacker'd raced for Duesenberg before the war, and was our Ace of Aces, I figured he had to be The Man. And Luke? Obviously, the young man was bad to the bone. Popped balloons left-and-right and went down shooting.
So... what makes a pilot "of interest" to you?
Sean
