After the short discussion on the list a week or so ago regarding books, I
am wondering if it would be of any value to have a page on the website with
an annotated bibliography, or rather multple ones broken down into
categories such as memior/autobiography; biography/history; photo
documentation/craft research; modeling/tech tips; and so on.
Said bibliography could include reviews or comments (duly cited) by list
members who have first-hand knowledge of the book in question, publishing
info and availability, &tc. Maybe a good way to tap into the underground
sea of knowledge that you all (collectively) contain ;)
I'd like to start with "Memoir/Autobiography." I'd like to keep the
biographies separate. They are distinctly different to me since they are
second hand. I think of biography as more like history.
If any of you has any suggestions or knowledge of the following (or any
other ot works), please let me know. After a while I'll try to write
everything into html on my page (if I can still find it) or maybe yall'd
prefer it on the wwi-modelers page somewhere. I'm just finicky about
organization and love to have lists.
Here goes what I have so far: Thank you!
Bartlett, Sqd Ldr C.P.O. *In the Teeth of the Wind: The Story of a Naval
Pilot on the Western Front 1916-1918*. US Naval Institute Press, 1994
5 Sq. RNAS then 205 Sq. RAF, most of Bartlett’s many missions were in a DH-4
bomber. See review at amazon:

)
Lee,* *Arthur Stanley Gould. *No Parachute: A Fighter Pilot in World War I:
letters written in 1917 by Lt. A. S. G. Lee.*
Lewis, Cecil. *Sagittarius Rising* 1936
56 Squadron SE5a pilot. Very highly praised work.
Libby,* *Frederick. *Horses Don’t Fly*
My favorite (though I haven't actually read many yet)—Libby was a real
cowboy who’d had enough and wanted to travel for fortune and excitement. He
happened to be in Canada when the war broke out so he renounced his US
citizenship and went into the ambulance service. He soon became an observer
in FE2bs and later a pilot, flying the Sopwith Strutter and the DH4 in
addition to the FE2b.
Manning, Frederic. *The Middle Parts of Fortune*
(not aviation) highly praised
McConnell, James R. *Flying for France: With the American Escadrille at
Verdun.*
McCudden,* *Capt. ____* Flying Fury*.
Mitchell, B.Gen. William. *Memoirs of World War I. *New York: Random House,
1960
Some of this was originally published in
*Liberty*in 1928.
The 1960 edition is the more complete.
Moore, Major W. G. *Early Bird *
Parsons, Edwin C. *I Flew With the Lafayette Escadrille.* Indianapolis: E C
Seale, 1963
I'm reading this right now, about halfway through.
Very elegant.
Raleigh and Jones? Vol 2
Reynolds,* *Quentin. *They Fought for the Sky*
Rickenbacker, Capt. Eddie V. *Fighting the Flying Circus. *Garden City:
Doubleday, 1965
This must've just been reprinted, I got a copy from
the local library and its brand new, but has the '65 date
Rickenbacker, Capt. Eddie V. *Seven Came Through*
* *OT or ot?
Vee, Roger (Vivian Voss). *Flying Minnows*
Yeates,* *V. M. *Winged Victory*
*_____. On Silver Wings*
**
Thank you!
