[WWI] Ansaldo A.1 wood color question

On the Ansaldo A.1 Ballila, was the wood on the fuselage stained dark or light?  I have photos of a dark stained one in Italian markings, but I was wondering about the ones used in Polish service. I seem to recall that those were license-built and not stained dark. Is there anything to this other than my faulty recall?
