Subject: Re: [WWI] Skybird Rumpler WAS FE2
Hi Steve
I finished the Rumpler last night, please find attached photo. The kit very
simple to build and very well engineered. The only slight problems I had was
that the camera opening in the etched brass flooring was on the wrong side.
The recent very hot weather we had caused the upper wing to warp, which I
straightened by taping the wing to a metal ruler and dipping it in hot
water, but I needed to cut down the centre of the wing and refix to apply
the correct dihedral. I really enjoyed making the undercarriage struts from
strutz using the method Mike showed us in February.
The biggest headache I had was with the colour scheme as most references I
could find were very vague on this. There was a profile of the machine I was
modelling on the back of the Windsock datafile but I became very suspicious
of this scheme for two reasons. 1. It was totally different to colours
detailed in an evaluation report of a machine from the same batch and 2. One
of the photgraphs of the machine in the datafile clearly shows a three
colour scheme. Anyway I eventually decided to go with a Pale Green/Dark
Green/Red Brown scheme as on the captured aircraft.
Regards
Dave
