[WWI] Bristol Scout D

I thought I was pretty familiar with the Scout, but I'm caught off-guard by
the blister in the lower starboard side of the cowl.  Does anyone know what
that is?

I went to the Shuttleworth Collection last Sunday, there is a Bristol Scout
