[WWI] SPADs

I'm kind of looking for an answer to a question that's been bugging me, about Eddie Rickenbacker's SPAD, (now that I finally have the American Eagles kit) Eduard says the Kellner SPADs had CDL undersides, but most of my other references say most (all?) late SPADs had gray undersides, not to bring up an other argument, but I'm just curious to find out if anyone really knows the answer.
