I went with alu crankcase and black cylinder heads, since I recalled seeing a Hisso engine supposedly from a XIII in the museum in Munich. In any case, it won't be visible in the model anyway.

Rick:
The Gronczewski and Fleischer SPAD VII book has only one contemporary photo of the Hispano, taken of a crashed aircraft with the cowl partially off. It is rather murky, but appears to show a black overall painted engine. Two other photos are "modern" in that they are shots of the restored "Barraca" SPAD VII in Torino, Italy. This engine is either overall black or gunmetal in color (which is admittedly blackish). A SPAD Hispano on the WW I Website taken at the Old Rhinebeck looks like a light gunmetal overall. An American-made Hispano is shown with black cylinder cases and cylinder heads, but an aluminium crankcase. The Windsock Datafile has a German photo of a captured SPAD VII of the nose with the louvered panel removed. What can be seen of the engine looks like aluminum, but the cylinder heads are not visible. The next page over shows a British-built SPAD with the top cowling removed. The cylinder cases look aluminum, but the cylinder heads are dark -- possibly black. The SPAD XIII Datafile shows dark cylinder heads on its title page, but the tone of the cylinder cases is not discernable. The photos of the Memorial Flight restoration of a Kellner-built 13 show dark cylinder heads and lighter cylinder cases.
I want to avoid fit problems so I won't be adding cylinder heads. I'm going with the overall aluminum with copper/brass fittings.
