Tom

There are disk recovery services that will get your data back no matter
how damaged it is. They strip it in a clean room and put all your data
on a new hard drive.

However this is not cheap.

I've been quoted between US$500 and $1,500 for my 500GB hard drive.

It has all of my children's photographs on it since birth, and 300GB of
music. But I don't have the money.....

Whatever you do on your own, don't format or re-format the disk.
