Thanks again, all. Mike, Painted the base colour (MrKit light Italian CDL),
dry brushed an ochre colour from Citadel (the photo of the real tailplane on
the back of the Windsock shows some sort of staining like this) then painted
first the green then the re-brown with a very small, square cut brush as per
the original. I went back over it later to give a more disrupted look with a
larger brush, but on reflection this looks more like stippling, so didn't
work so well. More dabbing away with the  little brush would have been
better.

The effect on the tailplane I'm happy with, since that's what I was aiming
at.
