 Hi Bill;

>I was always told he was gas'd in one of the battles, and lived with some
>lung damage the rest of his life. It doesn't mention that in his record
>though.

A lot of troops who were gassed remained in the line. My grandfather told me
about the first time the Canadians came under chlorine gas attack and how
they urinated on rags and covered their faces with them to filter the gas
out. He also said that the majority of the men who were exposed continued
to fight and I met several of his buddies who confirmed the story. At least
with chlorine gas, a lot of the troops were able to continue, I doubt that
anyone who got a lungful of mustard gas would.

Grandpa Clark died in 1973 of throat cancer. Several months previously he
told me that the Germans had finally done for him, but that it had taken two
wars, a gas attack, multiple bullet wounds and blowing him through a brick
wall as well to do the job. And then it had taken 31 additional years from
their last attempt for him to succumb.
