Speaking as a geologist he lied; if I had looked at the mineralogical structure under the microscope the minerals would not have been in scale and therefore they could not be scale rocks.

LOL, made me remind a chat I had with the local hobby shop owner:
 "What's this?" I pointed towards a small bag on a display rack
"Miniature rocks for dioramas" he replied.
"You mean, like mini rocks?" I asked.
"Yes, scale rocks, made of genuine rock material" He answered, with a
smile.
"You mean, like the small rocks you can find on any garden trail, or
constructions site?" I asked, perplexed
"Yes, but cleaned up and offered in a scale range from 1/72 to 1/35,
depending its use"

You forgot to ask him: "Like the ones in your garden?
