The seat on the 1/48 version is molded as vertical corrugated metal. But the one photo  I have(not here at work) shows the entire seat padded and upholsterd with leather. Looks like an original period specimin too.

The earlier Junkers J 7 appears to have a metal seat from the image in
“Geschicte de deutschen Luftfafhzeugtechnik Von der Junkers J1 bis zur F13” by Wolfgang Wagner

The J7 appears to have been the earliest incarnation of the J 9/D.I
The sides of the seat are corrugated (vertically) even…

I´ve been building Roden´s 1/72 Junkers D.I and found the kit seat unsatisfactory, so I built another one from plasticard.

The Junkers D.I restored in France has a fabric covered seat, but I´m not sure if it is correct for WW1 or if it was added during restoration.

Does anyone out there have a picture of that seat as it appeared in 1918? has any been published in Windsock magazine?
