That is so typical. I know of others with similar tales of woe. One of the best model builders I know had this superb diorama of a boat yard set in 18th century England. It sat in a museum's storage area for years. Another buyilder offered to clean and restore it and that was the last it was ever seen

A friend of mine had one of those, probably 20 or more years ago, with a CO2 motor in it, it was a beautiful model! I don't think he ever worked up the nerve to fly it.
Later, it ended up hanging from a hobby shop ceiling, and became quite dry and brittle. I ended up with it for a few years, then let another guy in the club have it to do some restoration work on it, and it hasn't been seen since.
