I guess, at least with 1 A-H E unit, it was done by sheep. Marty O'Conner has an interview in his book with an Austro-Hungarian pilot who said that sheep kept the 'drome mowed-and fertilized. He said that so much sheep dung clung to their a/c that the enemy could sniff 'em down. Must o' smelled....baaa-d  John Marganski
