Hi John;
I've worked with a number of Merlin kits through the years. For awhile, they were the only way outside of scratch building to get models of some planes, and I appreciated their pioneering spirit.
My advice though is to spend your time looking for a Pegasus kit of the Salmson. Keep the Merlin decals and other useful bits for spares.
Some Merlins can be made to look good with a lot of work. I have a handful in my collection, but whenever a Roden or Pegasus kit of the same plane came out the contrast was pretty big.
Typical Merlin problems were over-thick wings, asymmetrical details and poor-quality metal parts.

Subject: [WWI] Merlin Salmson
Digging thru my backlog of kits, I recently discovered Merlin #Q2, Salmson in US livery. I'd completely forgotten that I had it, and can see why I burried it. The lower starboard wing looks like a Ripples potato chip! Anyone have a spare? And, what can I do to replace, or improve, the lousy representation of the a/c's radiator? TYIA-John Maragnski
