[WWI] Markings for AEF Dorands, Strutters, Spad 11s

Does anyone know whether the early observation machines, which would have been delivered with French roundels, I assume, were repainted in AEF colors?  Or, knowing that they were only an interim solution, did the Americans merely put their squadron markings on the French ships?
