I think the point is, really, have a look at a photo of what you're
modelling. There are pics of WWI (or any era) aircraft that are pristine and
look brand spanking new, and there are those that look like they are nearly
ready to fall apart. Speculate all you like on maintenance and cleanliness
practices, but if you're trying represent any semblance of reality and you
load enough dirt on an aircraft model to bog a Panzer down then you'd best
have the photographic evidence to back it up. Just as those who like to
paint black criss-crossing panel lines all over their model, if it didn't
look that way in real life then you just have to put it down to personal
artistic license.
