Hi Tom,
According to the booklet in the Americal Gryphon Jasta 4 decals, Glenn Merrill (hope I spelled that right) states that Udet had the SS D.III painted red on 22 or 23 September after returning from leave. He was photographed in the red aircraft 24 September or 25 September, and he flew it in an impressive aerobatic display for the official photographer. It was then pushed back into the hanger not to be flown by Udet again. The next day he chose to fly his Fok. D VII into combat. he scored 2 victories but was wounded in the thigh and Udet's scoring and war were over.
So it appears that he never flew it in combat, he only flew it once earning the title "This machine has achieved a level of fame that it didn't really deserve"
Dave
