I'm working on the DV on which MvR was shot down.  There is an interesting article in the current Over the Front.In the photos of the plane, there is a triangular dark marking directly behind the cockpit.  The cover art shows it as a red "pennant" mark, but it's also possible this is just a darker stained area left from the removal of the headrest.Any thoughts on this?  Thanks.
 
Gabe, This is a "For what it is worth" answer. I have seen the profile drawn both ways in the past. IMHO, the darker unweathered wood seems more likely. My reasoning is as follows: At NO OTHER TIME did MvR use a pennant type of device painted on any of his Albatros scouts. Why this one? Removal of the headrest makes sense, at least to me.
