Gabe,
page 60 of Nowarra & Brown's "von Richthofen and the Flying Circus" has an overhead photo of a line of D.V's.
A scan of the photo is attached. D 1177 is next to bottom.
As you can see, there is no mark, triangular or otherwise, showing up on this photo. Having said that, there is no date, other than 1917, given for the photo. So the triangle may have appeared between this photo and those shown on OtF (which I haven't yet seen).

I'm working on the DV on which MvR was shot down. There is an interesting article in the current Over the Front.
In the photos of the plane, there is a triangular dark marking directly behind the cockpit. The cover art shows it as a red "pennant" mark, but it's also possible this is just a darker stained area left from the removal of the headrest.
Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
