Balancing was mainly aerodynamic in those days, so yes, they could all have drooped downwards. The balancing was by a "wedge", normally at teh end that the airstream would hit forcing or assisting the pilot in moving the aileron, elevator or rudder in its movement,otherwise he would have to fight the aerodynamic loading of the control surfaces himself. As the aircraft became faster, so balancing became more neccessary to overcome these aerodynamic loads.

Hello, I have a general question about ailerons. If a plane has unbalanced ailerons would all of them droop downward when at rest? How would they work in flight in that fasion? It seems to me they would be independent of each other. thanks Tim
