 "spelling doesn't count". I cannot imagine, for the life of me, what educator thought that was a good idea.

My English master at school was a believer in that doctrine.  His thinking was that he wanted a pupil to try to use a word and mis-spell it rather than not use the word at all because he/she couldn't spell it. He could always put the correct spelling in the margin.

He had limited success with me - I have a good vocabulary (Mike Kavanaugh will disagree - private joke!) but I'm still cr*p at spelling! 

On knees, face west and bow down to the great god Spellchecker.  Amen.
