The paint used in the front portion of the airframe tried to match the
colour of the fabric, even if it had a small difference in hue. Check the
pictures of the restored Guynemer Spad VII to have an idea on how those
colours might have looked. Besides, darker "greys" on some pictures would
mean different lighting conditions when the pictures were taken, and as you
probably know, the orthochromatic film used at the time photographed "warm"
colours (red, yellows, oranges) much darker than they were perceived in real
life.
