Monsieur Landon is on the right path, those stuts were made of wood and
metal, and the purpose was to avoid the rigging from inducing unwanted
vibrations during flight. Spads were in fact single bay rigged, but the
middle "struts" weren't structural, they only served to avoid long rigging
lenghts and minimize vibrations to the airframe in high speeds.

They allowed some adjustment, but since the Spads had zero stagger, their
rigging was relatively simple comapred to V strutters or airplanes with high
angles of staggering between wings.

I have many
I have many
I have many.
