Thanks Warren - that's very helpful.

I like the idea of buying a different style of cowling for the latter models so I may opt for that accessory, but if pre-drilled holes are the only benefit of their tail pieces I will likely pass.

              I just went to their website. The cowling that they offer has
  the "drainage" holes (or whatever they are called) drilled out, but it is
  the cowling with the seams/parts joined at the ten and two o'clock position,
  and not the cowling with the joined halves at the nine and three o'clock.
  Only a problem if you are modeling a cowling of the latter type.
  The modified tail surfaces just have the holes for the control wires drilled
  out.
  I personally find drilling the holes in the cowling and the tail one of the
  easiest modeling tasks, despite my screwing up my cowling. What I do find
  difficult is getting rid of the sprue attachement points and not messing up
  the delicate banding and joints they molded in.
