[WWI] Sub Confusion

I recently bought the Yankee Modelworks 1:350 U-35 (a very nice it).
The instructions say the sub is overall grey, with darker grey horizontal surfaces. A black waterline is also indicated.
The only other reference I have is the Osprey book, which indicates these boats were grey above the waterline and black below.
I know the Imperial Navy used 3 greys on their ships- light, medium, and anthracite at the waterlines, with hull red below the water (the YM instructions also indicate this as a possibility for the early subs)
So what I am asking is if there is a better reference source that someone has found and what colors are indicated. Maybe it is all conjecture, but I would like some feedback here.

                                  Thank-you very much!
