[WWI] French bis designation

Helen and Chris 2kermavio at orange.fr

Tim,

loosely, bis is another word for encore and means repeat. In numerical terms, it denotes a minor change to an existing number.

Hence an Albatros D.V has minor changes and becomes the D.Va. The "a" is the bis.

The Farman MF Xl had the pilot in front of the observer. But the MF Xlbis (or "a") had the positions swapped over. Essentially the same aircraft, but with minor changes which didn't warrant a new designation.

HTH

Chris.

This may be a silly question but here goes anyway. What does the bis designation mean on French aircraft. I cannot locate a specific answer in my references. Specifically Farman ( MF XI bis ) thanks, Tim

The list is quiet, so I'll just comment on the frustrations of modelling. I'm working on the 1/48 Roden SE5a, and that thing just seems to want to bite back. The kit decals are brittle, and the roundels don't want to lie down. The interplane struts are a nightmare, one broke loose during decalling, and I had to re rig half of that side,? touchup city! I 'love' the SE5, but that kit is entirely another matter,? even though I know it really isn't the kits fault.

  Hi,

The only kit I ever gave up with in frustration was a 1/48 Roden 1?
  Strutter bomber.

The instructions don't instruct. There are no bomb bay doors. Nothing
stuck together with CA glue. I shattered the ailerons trying to saw
them off. The transparent plastic wings and body were too brittle, and
  I'm just too ham-fisted.

I love their 1/72 scale ones, though. Working on 3 at the moment.
  incredible engine detail.

  Merrill,
I hear ya brother! I am working on an ot aircraft and I have had problems with bad fit in some areas, small part breaking as I remove them from the sprue, and decals crinkling and curling. I feel you pain.

They?re not my models, they were made by a friend at the Brampton Model
Club, Nigel Denchfield, who runs the IPMS(UK) Battleship SIG.
They?re not posted on the site as he?s not a listee. I don?t know what
Allan?s views on posting them would be. Maybe they could go in the Telford
  2008 page under Events

The Submarine Scout blimp on the GWICC display was made by Nigel?s father,
and he?s not a listee either.

Although it is 'in the range', 'concrete' seems to me to be too
gray, a little dark, and not brown enough, mix in a yellowish tan, like
'aged white', or one of the railroad color beige colors, just as a
  suggestion.FWIW

think it would be cool to have the bottom rear fuse in open position and have
the gunner lying there. just a cool point of interest. the Gotha V had a large
section of the rear fuse that the rear gunner could lower to an open position
and move his gun down there to give the gotha a "Sting" for those
below and behind the aircraft. was a nifty invention for the time

I can think of a few ways:

1: Is everyone on the list seeing mails posted by Paul Thompson?

2: Paul. Do other people reply to your posts or questions? This may
not prove it, since people viewing the archives will have no problems.

3: Paul. Post a question and see if you get any answers.

That's some great old footage, including some good details of some of those
crates. Also notable is the gloss finish on the wings of the pusher in the scene
  where they're starting the engine.
BUt in the opening scene, with all the cadets getting a lecture, watch the 6th
cadet from the left and tell me if he isn't copying off his neighbor's

I haven't seen it announced yet, but Roden is releasing a few 1/32nd WW1
  engines, by themselves. They are:

  *Gnome Monosoupape 100 h.p **1/32 scale *

  ***Hispano Suiza 8A 150 h.p **1/32 scale *

  ***Mercedes D.III 160 h.p.** 1/32 scale*

"I take it you mean the prancing horse insignia? I believe it was on both
sides of the fuselage. This later became the Ferrari symbol and is still in
  use by them today."

Yes, and if memory serves, Mr. Ferrari's brother was one of Barraca's
groundcrew. Said brother died of pnuemonia I believe. Ferrari, devastated at
the loss of a brother that he loved and admired very much, approached
Barraca's mother to ask if he could use the "Prancing Horse"
  (part of the
family coat of arms) as a symbol of a little automobile project he had been
working on. The rest, as they say, is history.

I've got a couple tall bottles of dullcoat. I thin it to about 2:1

If I ask that and they can, it will

Many posts go unanswered or apparantly
ignored, but I'm sure sometimes people
just don't have an answer to post. If
it's a comment or answer to a question
by me, then that could be easily
  overlooked.

  >3: Paul. Post a question and see if
  >you get any answers.<

Same as above - sometimes I get no
answer or just one or two - but in wwi
aviation there often just are no
answers. The problem arrises when I try
to take things offlist, when sometimes
only the void echoes back. There's only
one recent case, but unless I've
unknowingly done something to irk the
chap in question I don't know what to
do. A direct question provokes no
  answer.

Thanks for giving it some thought
  anyway.

  Paul.

I see Paul's e-mails, I'm just not smart enough to answer his
  questions.

If Paul is going to your spam folder, you need to modify your filters to
  'white list' his e-mail.

Well after a search of the not so local Hobbytown I found both Allan's
suggested product Testors #1260, and a Tamiya color product.

First problem is that the testors product is no longer behind a black and
yellow label. The new batch has an all white label, with gray tone
  lettering and a black cap.

I'm going to do an experiment on a piece of plastic seeing how each of these
top coats affect paint and future. Look for an IM article near you next
  year.

The list is quiet, so I'll just comment on the frustrations of modelling. I'm working on the 1/48 Roden SE5a, and that thing just seems to want to bite back. The kit decals are brittle, and the roundels don't want to lie down. The interplane struts are a nightmare, one broke loose during decalling, and I had to re rig half of that side, touchup city! I 'love' the SE5, but that kit is entirely another matter, even though I know it really isn't the kits fault.

Merrill, I can identify with your struggle. When the kit was first released I had the honor of doing the IM review build. I don't remember the month the build was published but you might find my self committed mishaps amusing, and in some ways encouraging. In the end it was one of my favorite builds for IM.

Those are probably the Meikraft molds, bought off the estate, as a guess.

Anybody know what molds these are? The latest Squander has it for $5.99 on the back cover. I ordered one, but was just wondering.

  FWIW I used this:

Folk Art brand acrylic "linen". 94 cents at Walmart.

It needs thinning, and I use future for that.

  Paul,

I can think of a few ways:

1: Is everyone on the list seeing mails posted by Paul Thompson?

2: Paul. Do other people reply to your posts or questions? This may
not prove it, since people viewing the archives will have no problems.

3: Paul. Post a question and see if you get any answers.

That's some great old footage, including some good details of some of those
crates. Also notable is the gloss finish on the wings of the pusher in the scene
  where they're starting the engine.
BUt in the opening scene, with all the cadets getting a lecture, watch the 6th
cadet from the left and tell me if he isn't copying off his neighbor's
paper. Shocking I tell ya, simply shocking.

I thin it to about 2:1
with Lacquer Thinner and shoot it through my airbrush. Goes down nice
and dries fast. Don't know if the bottles are still available
though. Haven't seen 'em lately at the hobby shop.

  Paul,

I can think of a few ways:

1: Is everyone on the list seeing mails
  posted by Paul Thompson?<

If I ask that and they can, it will
really clutter up normal mailings for
people, unless they reply direct to my
  email address.

  >2: Paul. Do other people reply to your
  >posts or questions? This may
not prove it, since people viewing the
  archives will have no problems.<

Many posts go unanswered or apparantly
ignored, but I'm sure sometimes people
just don't have an answer to post. If
it's a comment or answer to a question
by me, then that could be easily
  overlooked.

  >3: Paul. Post a question and see if
  >you get any answers.<

Same as above - sometimes I get no
answer or just one or two - but in wwi
aviation there often just are no
answers. The problem arrises when I try
to take things offlist, when sometimes
only the void echoes back. There's only
one recent case, but unless I've
unknowingly done something to irk the
chap in question I don't know what to
do. A direct question provokes no
  answer.

Thanks for giving it some thought
  anyway.

  Paul.

I see Paul's e-mails, I'm just not smart enough to answer his
  questions.

If Paul is going to your spam folder, you need to modify your filters to
  'white list' his e-mail.

I am seeking an article by Peter L. Gray, "Albatros Markings of Jasta
5" The article is reported to appear in the the November 1971 edition
of Scale Models magazine. I have done a fair amount of work on a
computer rendering of Bavarian marked Alb D.Va aircraft which is
thinly documented and I think this article may help. See the attached
rendering by Mark Miller. Mark has searched for the sources he used and
  reports he cannot locate them.

Please advise if you can help locate the article, or the magazine or
if you have any information regarding this aircraft.

I am aware at least two other similarly marked planes, including one, flown by a Lt Wolf,
which appears in GK Merill's 2 vol set on Jasta 5 with profiles by Bob Pearson. There is another
Bavarian marked Alb which was flown by Walter Boning with Jasta 76b which appears
in vol 1 of Albatros Aces of World War 1 by Norman Franks.
These two planes, though interesting, and part of my present project,
are not the primary focus of this inquiry.

Thanks for anything you might be able to do to help.

  sinbad
