What I do is go into a shallow dive towards where the fighters come out, leveling out with the lower bombers. When the first group led by the blue fighter comes onto the screen, I drop 4 or 5 bombs in their flight path. Sometimes I get lucky and take out the blue fighter and one or two green fighters like this. Sometimes I completely miss.
I did find an easier way through the 2nd bomber wave:
1. Start the action by hitting an arrow key instead of the space bar. This way you won't start off with guns blazing and the EA ignores you.
2. Fly over the blue fighter and trailing bomber and take them out with bombs.
3. Keep going forward and take out the other bombers, first the lower bomber(with bombs), then the formation leader, (with guns). After that, loop up and hit the high bomber.
4. Take out the green fighters(easy to do without the bombers shooting you up) and move on to the next wave.

If you've made it through all 25 waves and are now interested in getting the highest score you can, when possible, bomb the fighters instead of shooting them down. You get a lot more points that way. A good way to do it is to go into a vertical climb and when they get on your tail, drop a bomb. And always try to shoot down the parachutes too. Those are worth more than the EA. Also, you can get a lot of extra points by continuing to shoot the EA as they go down in flames. I've followed bombers down with guns blazing and racked up as much as 30K extra points(per bomber) once I got the Bonus Multiplier racked up good and high. I think I was getting 19K points for each parachute I flamed and each fighter I was able to bomb when I hit 4 Million.

I hate video games.
I need a life.
