Folks,
after more than 4 years away from model contests, I went to the IPMS Campinas/GPC event, perhaps the biggest one in Brazil, last weekend. It was great to see old friends again, and take a look at some wonderful works from fellow modelers.
The special aviation category this year was WWI, and maybe that was the reason there were 21 kits on the tables: 8 in 1/72 (including my 4 ones), 9 in 1/48 and 4 in the joint 1/28 and 1/32 category. I had never seen so many WWI kits in a contest.
Quality was also great, and I'm posting pictures on my blog ( www.jastamarcio.blogspot.com ). On the other side, I noticed that, despite the increase in models, some people still don't care about looking for references and make some mistakes. That's the same error I made when I started modelng -- trusting the instruction sheet. So we have things like black tires. And can anyone who has built Revell's 1/28 Dr.I confirm if the instruction sheet asks for a ***red*** 102/17? If you see the 1/28 pics you'll notice a red triplane marked as 102/17...
The trophy of best WWI model went to a 1/48 HD, but in my humble opinion it could hae gone also to an Albatros in 1/48. Both amazing builds!
In my category, 1/72, I had 4 of the 8 models. There was a pair of very beautiful Nieuports. I thought both would get medals, but surprisngly none got an award. There was also a Strutter nicely built, and an Esci D.VII in Berthold's colors. I thought the Strutter was better than the D.VII, but the judges gave 2nd to the Fokker. The other awards went to two of my kits: 1st to the Berthold's Pfalz D.IIIa, and 3rd to Hans Besser's Fokker D.VII.
I'm yet to publish detailed pics of the Pfalz, but the Fokker can be seen here: http://jastamarcio.blogspot.com/2008/07/garanto-que-nunca-ningum-levou-tanto.html
Of course I was very proud -- IIRC I had already got 1st in other contests, but then the only WWI models on the table were mine. Unfortunately I didn't manage to find the modelers who built the other kits, to invite them to the list. Hopefully I'll find them through the biggest modeling message boards in Brazil and we can have new additions.
All the best from Brazil
Marcio
