You are forgetting that you have color vision, which wasn't invented until, I believe, the 1940's or '50's (depending on which side of the international date line you were on). In black and white, all WWI aircraft were nearly invisible.

I've always been dumbfounded by the whole camo thing. Seems to me as soon as they added the big bright roundels, insignias, numbers and stripes it defeated the whole camo job. In every photo I've ever seen of WWI planes in flight or on the ground I CAN STILL SEE THEM CLEARLY.
