If you look carefully at some of the better pictures of the varnished wood fuselages, you will see some diffuse lines for the "panels". I think it is either the glue excess or edge showing or else the small amount of exposed end grain taking the finish differently from the field of the plywood. I mask my panels and dry brush "graining" into them. This leaves a slightly different edge where the masking tape prevented the same access to the dry brushing.

Thanks for the info. Going to experiment a bit and see which works for me. As for the panel lines, I was thinking of lightly scribing first, then painting the entire fuselage initially with the base, marking off each section, then dry brushing each panel individually with a little burnt umber. But I might try the pencil. Will keep you posted.

Doug, Thanks for the comments!! I use a base of MM wood then a Prismacolor watercolor pencil. I get a little water on the brush and dab it on the tip of the pencil. When dry I put on a coat of straight Future and then a coat of Future with a couple a couple drops of Tamiya clear yellow. I think it would look better if there were panel lines on the fuse. I think I'll try that next time!

Love the wood effect on teh fuselage. How did you do that?
I am building the 1/48th Albatros DII from Eduard. I have been reading on the various techniques, and well, hmmm, I only hope that my finished product is 1/10th as good as what you have achieved
