When I was taught woodworking in A&P school a scarfed joint was one in which the two sheets of wood were joined by a tapereing joint, often a 10:1 ratio, i.e. a 3 MM piece of plywood would have a 30 MM taper from full thickness to a knife sharp edge. The two tapered faces would be glued together to create a much stronger bond than a butt joint. If done properly the joint line on the outer surfaces is almost invisible.
