This is an old argument for which there is no right right or wrong solution. It's all down to personal preference and what you want to acheive from your model. Personally I agree with Michael (nice Albatros by the way). Washing panel lines is quick and easy way of making an average model look bloody nice if done with a little restraint. The Albatros is a particularly good subject for this as the washes will also enhance the polished wood effect as long as brush strokes are directionally consistant.

You can paint and mask, sure.  However, I like the panel lines - gives 
something for the wash to sink into - here's an example.
