Wow - that does look like black to me as well (or maybe even that "blue-ing" stuff applied to rifle barrels).

That is the first real evidence that I have seen on this matter.

  But then there's this: the joystick from 425/17, now housed in a museum in Australia. 
    Looks very black to me.
