[WWI] What did maintenance crews do with bullet holes?

Hi Rob,
The mechanics did patch them up using doped linen, in some pics I've seen, they left them as cdl patches, other times they painted cockades over them (on German planes), and I know that the
US pilots sometimes painted small crosses on the patches. At times, they would replace the entire wing, I guess because of bad damage.
