[WWI] What did maintenance crews do with bullet holes?

I believe they glued or doped on little round patches over bullet holes. Can't say for sure. Saw it somewhere. Larger damage might require a large rectangle of fabric but I don't think they'd recover a whole fuselage or a whole wing.
