Perhaps that would have been a better end for her(the Standart). Definitely
more memorable.
The reality was that she was stripped of all her Imperial gingerbread,
painted gray and pressed into military service as a mine layer, soldiering
on through the 2nd big unpleaswntness, and eventually being scrapped in
1963.
BUt it did get me thinking. I've seen the term 'Russian Ugly' used more than
once on this forum and in other mediums. However the Standard was anything
but ugly, imo. And from what I see in the pld photos, the Romanovs had very
little contact with anything 'ugly', (Rasputin excepted). And the trend
tends to be the masses try to emulate the royals in style and fashion, to
the degree they are financially able. At least until the revolution starts.
But I digress.
I'm thinking the term 'Russian Ugly' should be moth-balled and replaced with
'Soviet Ugly' since it was after the rise of Soviet Russia that things
became 'ugly'.
And before this becomes an argument over Monarchy vs Soviet Socialism,
please keep in mind that by 'ugly', I refer only to the fashions of dress
and decoration, not the policies of government.
