Actually, at 220V you can use thinner wire for the same power, since watts =
volts times amps. As you double the volts you halve the amps, which also
reduces the losses in the wires by a factor of 4. This is why power
transmission lines use megavolts, huge voltages and tiny currrents reduces
the losses.
