Excellant point! Sorry I forgot to mention it...and you're right, a gray surface definately works best. I use Polly-Scale French WWII Blue Gray, it just seems to work good for most lozenge tones. To avoid inks "bleeding", I spray several LIGHT coats of clear coating, and I've found that Testors decal sheets don't need much soaking time in warm water, so luckily I've never had a problem with bleeding.
