[WWI] "Accurate colours"

To be pedantic and metaphysical at the same time, these people are right, in a manner of speaking. There IS an actual absolute true color for each part of each plane at any given time, because they were physical realities.

The problem is, this color is unknowable with absolute accuracy at this remove. True color can only be derived by claiming it is within a knowable range, in many cases, and therefore approachable. However, there are many cases where there was a particular color on the plane, but at this remove it is totally unknown -- such as the cases of planes like Udet's candy stripe "du doch nicht!" and the Albatros built plane with a 'W' pattern on the side and provided in the Eduard Royal Class kit -- in both cases, there is reasonable doubt of whether the color was red or black. There is no conclusive description in either case.

Michael,
As I see it there will always be modelers who are trying to find the absolute true color as used on a certain aeroplane at a certain date.
It is my contention that these modelers are the kind of people who insist that there is an absolute true color because they want there to be absolutes in their lives. It is a personal need for these people.
