One nice thing about being in various hobbies is that I can be on a number of different forums. Then I can get hints and tricks that I can bring over from one area of modeling to another.
I am on a paper models forum and although I seldom contribute (for various reasons) I do enjoy reading about some of their shenanigans.
Just now I read a little discussion between two guys who were working on paper card models of WW1 aircraft. Note that most of the paper card airplane models are either 1/33 or 1/50 scale:
Question: "Nice Nieuport. What did you use for the wing wire bracing?"
Answer: "I used 10/0 fly tying silk which I stiffened a bit with PVA glue."
Have any of you tried that material? I never have. Sounds interesting.
In dealing with paper card models, metal is almost never used, However, at times they will use wood. Paper card modelers often try to use nothing but paper card, To get cylinders they will roll up paper card into small diameter tubes.
I have no such purity of material in my creations, as I'll use anything I like, especially fiberglass, bondo, phenolic microballoons, etc.
Its is hobby and there is no "correct" material for one to use.
To me, that is the beauty of a hobby, It is like my sculpture, I alone determine what is correct in my work. No one else.
Sometimes I'll use new materials just for the fun of experimenting with them.
To me, if a hobby is not fun and interesting and challenging, whats the good of it?
Just my thoughts.
Stephen
